ALA Emerging Leaders

Since graduating from Emerging Leaders in 2013, I have taken on increasing leadership roles in the program. For two years immediately following my EL year, I chaired the interest group to which all EL alumni belong. Since 2016, I have co-chaired the Emerging Leaders working group that oversees and administers the program. I'm incredibly proud to be able to give back by mentoring these diverse classes of amazing current and future library leaders.

I pursue leadership and collaborative opportunities within the workplace whenever I can! As the Lead Administrator for our Teen Facebook Page at Milwaukee Public Library, I oversaw 10 librarians at a variety of branches as we developed new ways to meet teens where they are, engage them, and develop policy.  I coordinated the Teen Advisory Board with two other librarians.  I have served on the displays committee, children’s programming committee, and 9/11 10th Anniversary Committee, among others.

In my current position at Kitsap Regional Library, I served on the One Book, One Community committee that selected the book and the programming for a county-wide read in October 2012. I am also on the reference committee for the digital branch, where my tasks include researching, implementing, and evaluating new technology, maintaining our social media presence, blogging, offering input on the wesite, and writing social media policy.

I love the energy of working with my fabulous colleagues to innovate, develop, and finally implement impactful programs and services!

The Freedom to Read Foundation offers this annual scholarship to a young professional with an interest in intellectual freedom.  (Learn more here.) As part of this scholarship, I will engage with a variety of intellectual freedom advocates from across the country.  I hope this award is just a first step in a career-long journey to offer the best, most ethical service to all patrons.  Balancing competing concerns and interests, especially in the face of rapidly-evolving technology, is one of the most difficult and important roles librarians play as stewards of a democratic institution.  I strive to preserve and enhance the principles of intellectual freedom in my actions and my professional writing.
