Dying for Love: A Valentine's Day Murder Mystery
February 2012
For Valentine's Day, my coworkers and I wanted to do something that would be a great but unusual date, one that would attract even those with an anti-Valentine's bent. We also wanted a way for people to have fun in an alcohol-free environment, something that is not always easy on a wine-soaked holiday. And what's more seductive than a little mystery?
I wrote the text, set the scenes, filmed the suspect statements and confessions, and created all the clues and handouts and peripherals. My coworkers did an incredible job of providing props, and dressing the scenes so that they were more fun, intricate and realistic than I could ever have imagined! The turnout was incredible - 60 people on the Friday night of V-Day weekend. Best of all, we didn't just attract adults (though we had plenty); whole families came together. Groups of teens traded tips with groups of middle-aged women; twentysomethings whispered ideas on their date; grandmothers let grandkids run around to find the clues. I LOVED seeing them all packed into the stacks, chasing Dewey Decimal clues. I've never seen anyone so excited to use the catalog!
After this success, we made allt he mystery events multi-age, and host them at a rate of about two a year (or as fast I can write and film them!)
