Books on Tap, Kitsap Regional Library
April 2012 - Present
Competencies demonstrated:
What author wrote under the pen name Currer Bell?
In A Clockwork Orange, what are “droogs”?
In The Omnivore’s Dilemma, how many ingredients does Michael Pollan say are in a chicken nugget?
Name the book that begins: “It was Wang Lung’s marriage day.”
Kitsap county residents can test their literary chops on questions like these at Books on Tap, a monthly 21+ literary trivia and games program that meets in a local bar and restaurant. The trivia is based on a booklist of 50+ titles that I refresh approximately every six months. The motto “Read More, Win More” encourages participants to work their way through the list, which includes a variety of literature from Jane Eyre to The Walking Dead, while never excluding new participants who haven’t read in advance. (Here’s a sample list.) We have a great time! The social, community-building atmosphere and friendly competition makes reading more fun for all of us.
The staff as a whole had created the idea for a bar-based program during an all-staff day a few weeks before I started at this library. I realized that it would be an excellent way to target 20-and-30 somethings, a significantly underserved group in my community. Because of my passion for reaching out to this group, I took on the implementation of the staff’s wonderful idea. I met with the other librarians to brainstorm logistics and possible partners. We chose Treehouse Cafe for several reasons. It is large enough to accommodate large groups; it has a history of supporting community activities; it is popular among our target demographic; and it is physically far from the library, hopefully allowing us to reach a new group of people. I truly enjoyed taking the lead on this project, sharing in the group’s enthusiasm as they saw their idea fleshed out and coming to life!
