Ferry Tales Expansion: Author Visits, Kitsap Regional Library
April 2013 - present
Because of the success of the Ferry Tales book group aboard the Seattle-Bainbridge Island commuter ferry, local authors began contacting me to ask about participating. Working with administration, we designed an expanded program that would create a library presence on board at a regular weekly time. One week would be the book discussion group; one week would be a Meet the Author visit; and the remaining weeks would be filled in with librarian programming, such as ebook downloading classes and book talks. After a few weeks and the retirement of a key staff person, it became clear that this schedule was too ambitious for our current staffing levels and priorities. We met and decided to be more strategic about our programs on board, hosting only the book group and the monthly author visits. Our first author was bestselling writer Susan Wiggs. She drew quite a crowd - she gave away 100 books! In the clip below, she discusses the program beginning at about 6:30.
What's next for Ferry Tales? Well, we're starting to work with a local business to plan a "rolling" event that begins on the ferry and ends in their space ... more to come soon!
